South Asian Men

Men’s mental health issues within the South Asian community are influenced by cultural, social, and familial factors that shape their perceptions and experiences. These cultural factors are taken into account by our therapists to provide effective therapy for South Asian men.

Traditionally, men have been less likely to seek support for mental health issues. Mental illness, in many South Asian households, is a highly taboo topic that leads individuals to conceal their struggles to maintain their reputation and social status, along with the feelings of shame associated with getting help. This societal pressure and cultural conditioning significantly hinders those affected from accessing the necessary help. This reluctance is likely due to several factors, including stigma and the enduring stereotype of the ‘strong male’ in our society, which portrays the expression of emotion as a sign of weakness.

Challenges faced by South Asian Men:

  1. Cultural Expectations: South Asian cultures often emphasise stoicism, strength, and the provider role for men. The fear of appearing weak or vulnerable can discourage men from seeking help for mental health issues.
  2. Stigma and Shame: Mental health issues are stigmatised in South Asian communities, and men may be discouraged from seeking help due to fear of judgement or shame from family and community.
  3. Family Dynamics: Men may experience pressure to fulfil traditional roles and expectations, as family plays a central role in South Asian cultures. This can contribute to stress and mental health problems.
  4. Gender Roles and Masculinity: Traditional gender roles and societal expectations of masculinity can create barriers to acknowledging and expressing emotions, leading to internalised stress and mental health issues.
  5. Work and Financial Stress: Pressure to succeed professionally and financially can lead to stress, anxiety, and depression among South Asian men. High expectations from family and community can also exacerbate this.
  6. Substance Use: In some cases, South Asian men may turn to alcohol or other substances as a coping mechanism for stress and mental health issues.

Therapists are sensitive to the unique cultural and social contexts that shape South Asian men’s experiences and perceptions of mental health.
